Your legal requirements in Colorado
What the law actually requires where you are — summarized from our jurisdiction guides. Open any topic for the full details.
Colorado has no approved State Plan, so it follows federal OSHA: 29 CFR 1910.151(b) sets no fixed ratio but requires one or more persons adequately trained to render first aid when there is no clinic or hospital in 'near proximity' (interpreted as a 3-to-4-minute response in high-hazard settings, up to 15 minutes in low-hazard ones), with the number scaled to workplace hazards.
Colorado childcare licensing (12 CCR 2509-8, Rule 7.702.42) requires at least one on-duty staff member per 30 or fewer children to hold a Department-approved First Aid and Safety Certificate including CPR for all ages, with uncertified new hires completing the Introduction to First Aid and CPR module within 30 days and renewal every 2 years.
Colorado's Good Samaritan statute (Colo. Rev. Stat. § 13-21-108) grants immunity to anyone who in good faith renders emergency care without compensation at the scene, and a companion provision (§ 13-21-108.1) covers AED use; immunity is lost for grossly negligent or willful and wanton acts.
The Colorado State Board of Nursing sets no fixed continuing-education hours for RN/LPN renewal, so a CPR/BLS course does not by itself satisfy a CE requirement, though CPR/AED, ACLS and PALS are eligible activities and a recognized documented certificate evidences a nurse's competency to respond in an emergency.
Colorado assisted living residences, governed by 6 CCR 1011-1 Chapter 7, must have staff certified in Adult CPR and Adult First Aid and must post the list of certified employees so care staff can intervene until emergency services arrive.
Under the Code of Colorado Regulations governing foster care, each foster parent must be certified in first aid and in CPR appropriate to the ages of the children placed (including adult and infant/child CPR), kept current at all times while the home is certified, administered by the Colorado Department of Human Services and county child welfare agencies.
Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in Colorado for personal, childcare-licensing, and employer purposes, with no explicit ban for the workplace requirement, though OSHA recommends a hands-on skills-demonstration component especially for CPR.
