Foster families: first-aid and CPR standards

Becoming a certified foster parent in Colorado means providing a safe home to a child in the care of a county human services department. Among the certification requirements: each foster parent must be certified in first aid and CPR for the ages of the children placed.

The first-aid requirement

Under the Code of Colorado Regulations governing foster care, each foster parent must be certified in first aid (or the equivalent) and in CPR appropriate to the ages of the children in placement, including adult and infant/child CPR. Certification must be current at all times while the home is certified.

The requirement is administered by the Colorado Department of Human Services and the county child welfare agencies that certify homes. The certificate is one requirement in addition to the approved home study and the pre-certification training that prospective foster parents must complete.

Severe allergies and anaphylaxis

A recognized first-aid certificate covers recognizing and responding to severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), including the use of an epinephrine auto-injector.

How to meet it

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this requirement. It is in addition to the required training or assessment, and is renewed periodically.
